There was something similar in sonic 3 though didn't happen as quick. There was an alarm thing in launch base zone where a robotnik bird thing flies at you when you walk through it. Keep spindash held there and you would get a 1up every so often cause of score. I wanted to see if the lives reset or went up past 100..but suppose it's useful if you got it plugged into sonic and knuckles too.

It really speaks to how limited the devs were back then. There was so little storage and so little active memory to work with. Fast forward to the late '90s, and the Deus Ex developers scrapped a female character option because the alternate voice files wouldn't fit on the CD. Today, that's not the same limiting factor it used to be. It still matters, but not to the same extent.
